How to download SMBC transactions as CSV

CSV download is part of SMBC Direct, Sumitomo Mitsui's online banking. The steps, from SMBC's 残高・入出金明細 help page:

  1. Log in to SMBC Direct and open the account's 残高・入出金明細 (balance and transaction details).
  2. Below the balance, choose 過去の明細を照会 (view past transactions). Enter dates, or use the 今月 / 先月 / 今年 / 前年 / 直近1年 buttons (this month, last month, this year, last year, last 12 months).
  3. Download the result as CSV. For oldest-first order, sort by 明細が古い順 (oldest first) before downloading.

The CSV uses Western-calendar dates (西暦) and keeps the order shown on screen; Web通帳 users also get their memos and colour labels in it. Between 21:00 on Sunday and 7:00 on Monday only the last two months can be viewed. SMBC ended its Microsoft Money import in 2021 and points users to the CSV instead.

How far back SMBC lets you download

The online window depends on whether the account is a Web通帳 (paperless passbook) or still has a paper passbook:

AccountOnline historyRows per inquiryWith us
Web通帳 ordinary accountUp to 30 years, for transactions from 2019 onUp to 2,000Upload the CSV (saved as CSV UTF-8)
Ordinary account with a paper passbook (紙通帳)Up to 25 months (from the 1st of the month 24 months back)Up to 300Upload the CSV (saved as CSV UTF-8)
Savings (貯蓄), current (当座) and card-loan accounts with paper passbooksUp to 2 months (from the 1st of last month)Up to 300Upload the CSV (saved as CSV UTF-8)
Business accounts on Valuedoor (Web通帳・Web帳票)CSV for 2 years, PDF for 10 years—CSV: upload it; PDF: 1 page per page

If an inquiry hits the row limit, split the period and download several files — you can upload them together. Web通帳 history isn't available once the account is closed, and Valuedoor keeps nothing from before the switch to Web, so save files in time. Sources: SMBC's Web通帳 page and Valuedoor notes.

When you still need to convert SMBC passbooks or PDFs

Passbook photos and scans are read like any scanned bank statement: each photo or PDF page counts as one page, and every printed line is checked against the running balance. Use JPG or PNG up to about 3.5 MB; iPhone HEIC photos aren't accepted, so set the camera to Most Compatible first.

  • Passbook pages older than 25 months. The online window ends there, so earlier years exist only in the passbook.
  • Transactions from before 2019, even on Web通帳 accounts.
  • Valuedoor PDF statements between 2 and 10 years old, when the CSV is no longer offered.
  • Closed accounts, and passbook copies or PDFs received from clients.
  • Several accounts at once — an SMBC account, a Japan Post Bank passbook and a card — merged into one file for your 会計ソフト (accounting software).

SMBC CSV and passbook quirks

  • A dash in empty cells. Because the CSV copies the screen, the withdrawal column (お引出し) contains a full-width dash (-) where there's no amount. SMBC's own tip is to remove it with Find and Replace before working with the file in Excel.
  • Japanese encoding. Japanese bank CSV files are usually saved in Shift_JIS. Save the file in Excel as CSV UTF-8 before uploading, so the descriptions in お取り扱い内容 (transaction details) come through readable.
  • Era dates on paper. Passbooks commonly print the Japanese era year (Reiwa 7 is 2025), while the CSV uses Western years. Check the first rows in the preview.
  • Katakana payees. Transfers usually show the other party in half-width katakana and card payments as short codes. The original text stays in the Description column next to the cleaned payee.
  • Whole yen. Amounts have no decimals, and withdrawals and deposits sit in separate columns. The export turns them into one signed amount.

Keep a longer history: switch to Web通帳

Paper-passbook accounts keep only 25 months online, while Web通帳 accounts can look back up to 30 years (transactions from 2019 on). In SMBC Direct, open the top-left menu → 各種サービス (services) → Web通帳 → 切り替える (switch). In the 三井住友銀行アプリ (SMBC app), tap メニュー → Web通帳.

Keep or scan your existing passbooks anyway: they're the record for anything the online history doesn't cover.

Convert SMBC statements to Excel, CSV or accounting software

Every transaction gets a clean payee name and a category, and the balance check proves the conversion: opening balance + deposits − withdrawals = closing balance, with the running balance checked on every row. Rows that don't add up are highlighted with their page number, and statements that don't balance are free (up to 30 pages a month). Then export:

  • Excel: a Transactions sheet with real dates and numbers, plus a Summary sheet by category and month
  • CSV with YYYY-MM-DD dates, to import into freee, Money Forward Cloud, Yayoi or a spreadsheet
  • QuickBooks Online CSV, Xero CSV, OFX or QIF for companies and expats who keep their books outside Japan

Web通帳 accounts: up to 30 years, for transactions from 2019 on (2,000 rows per inquiry). Ordinary accounts with a paper passbook: up to 25 months (300 rows). Savings, current and card-loan accounts with passbooks: 2 months.

How do I convert SMBC passbook pages older than 25 months?

Photograph or scan the pages (JPG, PNG or PDF), upload them in order and export to Excel or CSV. Each line is checked against the printed balance, so misread figures are flagged.

Can I get SMBC statements as PDF?

Business customers on Valuedoor can download PDF statements for 10 years and CSV for 2 years. For personal accounts, SMBC Direct documents CSV download and printing of the transaction list.

Why does my SMBC CSV look garbled after uploading?

It's usually saved in Shift_JIS. Open it in Excel, save it as CSV UTF-8 and upload that copy.

Is it safe to upload SMBC statements?

Uploaded files are processed in memory and never stored; only the extracted transactions are kept until you delete them. We never ask for your SMBC Direct login. See security.

What does it cost?

Passbook photos and PDF pages with transactions count one page each; 100 pages cost $12 and never expire. You see the transaction count and balance check before paying — see pricing.
